Family moving house with hire van

4 tips for moving home during lockdown

About to move home?

It can be a stressful experience at the best of times, let alone amidst a global pandemic! And whilst moving home during lockdown is allowed, the safety and wellbeing of all those involved should be your number one priority – and it’s crucial that you follow the government guidance in place.

Here we offer a few ‘moving house tips’ to help the process run as smoothly and safely as possible.

  1. 1. Arrange a hire van

Whilst removal companies are permitted to carry out work, there’s no guarantee that your chosen firm will be operating during lockdown – and a safer alternative may be to hire a van instead.

Here at PSD, we’re still open for business and offering a contactless van rental service for those wishing to move home. All of our vehicles are thoroughly sanitised between each use and provide a safe, convenient way to move your belongings, without having to interact with a removals team.

You can choose from a variety of models and all of our van hires are very competitively priced.

  1. 2. Pack everything yourself

The latest advice is to ‘stay at home’; so, you should have plenty of spare time to pack your own belongings – and there’s no need to recruit friends, family or a removal team for this purpose.

Lots of guidance on how to pack items, particularly fragile items, can be found online. And to keep costs to a minimum – and avoid an unnecessary trip to the shops – why not use materials you already have at home to ensure items are safe and secure? For example, you could wrap glassware in large towels and tie them with string? Or use suitcases to transport clothes and shoes?

  1. 3. Reject offers of help if possible

According to government guidance, one other household can help to move your belongings. But as tempting as help sounds, is it really essential? When you rent a van for moving house, there’s absolutely no rush. You can hire the vehicle for a day, two days, a week, a month – as long as you need. And although it’ll take longer for you to get settled, working alone is by far the safest option.

If you do choose to accept the help of friends or family, be sure to stick to social distancing and hygiene measures wherever possible. It’s important that you wear a mask, wash or sanitise your hands regularly, and open any internal doors. And as harsh as you may feel, don’t offer them a brew.

  1. 4. Clean your new home

Stock up on a range of domestic cleaning products and keep these somewhere accessible. Once you arrive at your new home on moving day, give each room a deep clean before you unpack – paying close attention to high-touch areas, such as door handles, cupboard handles and work surfaces.

This is particularly important if the property was recently occupied by another family. COVID-19 can live on some surfaces for up to several days and sanitising will reduce the risk of transmission.
